Potty Training Purgatory

This may not be the most interesting of things to read about, but I know that many of you out there have just gone through this lovely stage with your children. So perhaps you've got some good ideas...or at the very least, some sympathy. I'll imagine that you're all here with me, giving me sympathetic looks, and giving good advice.

Me: Hi, my name is 'No Mommy' and I have been trying to potty train my son for 8 months.

You: 8 months?

Me: Yes. My son inherited some stubborn genes from someone. Probably not me.

You: Well, what have you tried?

Me: Bribing with candy. Having him go every hour. Taking away the diapers. Having him change the pullups himself and clean up. Long discussions about what big boys do and don't do, and what baby sisters do and don't do. And last but not least...paternal example.

You: Hmmmm, have you tried the "He's not ready until he wakes up dry" theory?

Me: David, being privy to the latest medical knowledge, received a medical update just a couple of weeks ago stating that nocturnal bladder control in children is dictated by a hormone, and it doesn't kick in fully until some time between the ages of 4 and 11. So that's out.

You: Hmmmm. The only other thing I can think of is the Foley Catheter method.

Me: It crosses my mind on occasion....that and the Orogastric tube method to deal with picky eating. It may be unethical though.

You: I'll have to think about this.

Me: Please come back when you have an answer!...Please!

I tried it all too. It didn't work for a long long time. I gave up for quite a while then told him one day that we would till the garden with grandpa's tiller when he started wearing underwear. It was the bribery he needed (don't know why the candy, balloons, bowling etc. bribery didn't work earlier). He was nearly 3 1/2. Haven't even started with my 2 1/2 year old.

Since David does have access I am all for the Foley! I think I'd like it at night when I'm pregnant.

What worked for me was to have Matthew go without wearing anything on the bottom for abou 2 weeks until went to the bathroom on his own consistently. Hope you find something that works!

Garrett (the pre-schooler I tended from the time he was a newborn) informed his mother that he was not going potty in the toilet until he started pre-school. The day he started (age 3) he put on his 'big boy underwear' and was accident free. That was his mind set and no one could change it. End of story.

Miles was very headstrong about potty training as well. He finally told us that he would wear "big boy" underwear and use the toilet when he turned three, so we just gave up until then. On occasion,we would remind him about what he had said and he would agree that once he turned three, he would do it. Guess what? He turned three, put on the underwear, and used the toilet from that day forward. It had to be his idea. Don't you just love power struggles? Good training for the teenage years...ha, ha!

I can totally relate and mostly just have sympathy. Right now we're working on #2 in the toilet. With #1 I finally just put Will back in pullups and he just started going when he wanted to. I may have to try the same thing with #2...stubborn kids!

No answers, just commiseration. Each one of mine has taken longer than the last. Tanner was closer to four than three when he was trained. Maya(oldest) worked with a month of bribery. Garrett worked with 3-4 months of bribery, then the naked thing worked until his toddler brother kept grabbing the said area (then the underwear went on)-but Tanner-just eventually did it after at least eight months of trying I think all of the mentioned....GOOD LUCK!
