For fun, we decided to get one kind of each apple at the store and have a taste test. (Red Delicious weren't included. They're banned from our house because they have the texture of wet chalk.) Our favorite ones were the Pinata, Cripps Pink, and Jonagold. The others didn't have much of a strong apple flavor, we thought. It was a fun activity that the kids liked, and a good way to decide which apple trees to plant in the future.

That is a really good idea! I think we should do that at our house too.
ooo that is a really good idea. I am a big fan of jonagolds, so if they have them I don't usually get anything else. But I should expand my horizons. Also, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who has a personal vendetta against red delicious. What a misnomer...
I love Pink Cripps....mmmmm!
Apples! Apples! Apples! Apples! Apples! Apples! Apples! Apples! Apples! Apples! Mmmmmmmmmmmm! Fresh from the tree!!!!! Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
great idea, and nice tile too
Couldn't agree more on the red delicious. *barf*
We love Jonagolds! I haven't tried your other favorites. That really is a good idea, Tracy. I love your desire to try new things, and involve your kids in the process.
I like that idea. We kind of did that when we lived in CT and went to the apple orchard. We just planted some apple trees in our back yard. Each tree has 3 different apples grafted onto the trunk since apples can't pollinate themselves. And, I totally agree about red delicious. How did they become so popular? They were the first gone at the orchard and we didn't care--nasty!
Have you tried a "Grapple"? I may have to bring you one, they are a hybrid apple that smells just like a grape. They taste ok, but not my favorite.
